Developing the wider curriculum

Over the last few years, I have collaborated in occupational areas such as sports, creative arts, and construction, looking at learners' personal development. Learners’ personal development has been assessed in successive inspection frameworks. Beyond inspection, it plays a critical role in enhancing learners' skills for life and employment. Teachers and leaders can help learners understand the industry they are preparing for. Moreover, they can help learners become better citizens in their communities and society. However, although organisations have a list of things they know and can do, they often struggle to design these into a broader curriculum. Valuable items appear in workshops and classrooms without any coordinated thinking. Helping teams to develop, sequence and teach these aspects in a relevant way to their learners is rewarding. There is so much to talk about in any occupational area!
